Hello, all!
I have a 2009 Explorer 4.0L. We recently pulled the engine to replace the head gaskets and timing chains. Drove it for over 2 hours and the "wrench" light came on. Checked the codes and came up with P0320. I replaced the crank sensor and CPS. Took it for a test drive and didn't make it 10 minutes when the "wrench" and CEL came on and started running rough. Since it was running fine with old sensors, I put those back on. Ran great for 30 minutes and everything happened again. Traced the wire harness and happened upon the TPS connector that had three bare wires at the edge of the wire loom. I spliced the wires. Ran great for an hour and now it's all happening again. Do any of y'all have any idea what it could be?

Are there any other bad spots in the wires? Also are all of the wire harnesses put back on? I'd give it another visual once over. That one harness with the bad wires may have another bad spot on it. You may have to replace that entire harness.

Thanks for the reply. I have inspected the wire harnesses very carefully and it is in great shape. The bare wires were rubbed by the end of the wire loom. I had the same thing happen to the connector on the exhaust back pressure valve on my old 2004 F350. The loom rubs the insulation off the wires.

Did those wires possibly begin to sever under the connector? Also off topic did you replace intake manifold gaskets when putting the whole project back together?

I don't think so. I ordered a new connector pigtail just in case. I do not recall if we replaced the intake manifold gasket. My brother did most of the work on it while I was out of town.

I just wanted to give y'all an update. I took the Explorer to a local shop that I trust. They ran diagnostics on the crank sensor and it was giving erratic readings. They suspected something may be up with the crank sensor tone wheel. They used a gaussmeter and it showed that the tone wheel had a moderate level of magnetism. I guess we had it too close to a magnetic parts tray. We will replace the crank pulley and see if that fixes it. This is a new one for me.
