Well, I finally got the truck back yesterday. I was charged $400 for a new EGR Valve, and "solenoid Vacuum EGR component" The "check engine" light is gone for now. The EGR Valve was $175 including labor, and the Solenoid Vacuum was $225  (expensive) I asked the tech to point out what he changed, and it seemed like a plastic "cap" of some sorts (like a large soda bottle) Anyhow, thanks for everyones help again!

Actually, if you had just done the EGR, that would have been a great price considering the labor. Might be debatable whether you needed both. But really they probably just split the labor between the two, so if you had just done one, you'd probably have paid nearly the same labor, which is probably why they just did both. Not a bad price overall, coming from someone who did it himself. It was somewhat of a PITA.

Geezum I dunno if the EGR vacum solenoid is the same as the DPFE but you couldve gotten that way cheaper($40-50) and the EGR valve itself(bout the same)...Installation yourself wouldnt have been that difficult.. oh just realized you got a v8 might be a different setup than the V6 opps but hey it still sounded like a bit much for a EGR job

Yeah, V8 is different. Later ones have a DPFE, but my '97 doesn't. That's the first thing and easiest to check, but with the older system, you might as well replace everything else if you're going for the EGR.
