When I was at the car wash today, i was looked underneath to spray off dirt. On the left side of the rear end axle, i saw a hose that broke away from the axle.

This picture is taken looking towards the front on the car, the driver side, the rear. It looks like I have plenty of hose to reconnect. Does this hose slide over a receptacle? And what is this hose and what does it do? I think if I take off on the axle where it broke, and slide the hose back on, I would be ok. Please help. Thanks. MATT

It's the breather pipe to let the air in and out as the oil expands and contracts. Just trim off the broken piece and re-connect it.

Ok, a breather pipe for what though? The rear diff.? Is there any damage that could have been done by having this disconnected? Thanks Howard

The only possible damage would be to have let in some water (if you've gone trough a river or large puddle). Best bet would be none.

Edit: Yes for the rear diff and axle. see above.

Ok thanks.... I just went out and put the hose back on........ should I use a hose clamp is addition? Right now the connection is pretty snug. I just dont want to snap it again.

I was driving through a muddy parking lot. I dont know is any dirt or water got in. If any did, is there anything I could do? PS~ My 90K mile service is coming up soon, and I think they drain the rear diff. then.

You could fit a jubilee clip but that won't stop the sort of break that you had which is caused by the rubber pipe being 'work hardened' by the movement of the axle and the flexing of the pipe. Gradually the pipe goes brittle, at the main point of flex, and breaks. There is no way round this one except to regularly check all the rubber pipes and change them when they feel hard.

If any water has got in the oil and your going for a service soon just get them to change the oil in the rear axle. You'll be fine.

Hey, thanks so much man. I really appreciate your help.
