Ok, I've been interested in checking into this for a while, but am having some trouble finding the info. My friend is a VW fanatic. He has like 6 of them. He uses his laptop for checking the ECU codes. All it takes is a serial cable connected to his laptop with a special connector plug that hooks into the ECU port on the car. Of course, he has VW specific diagnostic software. My question is this: Does anyone know if there is software available for different manufacturers? Where to get it? If there is a cable I can buy that will serve this purpose? I think it would be a good idea, since you could also diagnose other vehicles (not that I would actually OWN anything other than a FORD.)

Ideas?

You need a Program called Autotap. Search around on the net and see what you can find.

However I think checker has a Special going right now for 99$ for OBD-II scanner :)

try www.obddiagnostics.com

i bought the interface there for $80. the software is on the site and can be downloaded for free. i have used it for my ex, a chrysler, and a nissan.

I use a great product from www.obd-2.com. Highly recommended.

Make sure you get a scanner to see live sensor data, not a code reader which does exactly that.

80$? wow prices on autotap stuff has gone down alot. I just might pick that up...
