- '96 XLT 2wd
Hi all. I'm a newbie to this message board with a question. My '96 XLT runs great but the tranny shifts with these long, drawn-out shifts. There's no out of control slippage and all gears engage normally. My question is can I substitute the Mercon fluid for Type-F? I know Type-F is for older Fords where the clutches / bands were designed for this and this fluid is "grabby" but I've seen GM vehicles us Type-F with shift kits with no detrimental effects. Maybe a 50/50 blend of Mercon & Type-F or maybe B&M Trick Shift fluid would help? I don't want to tear the trans apart to install a shift kit; just looking for a little improvement. I have 25,000 miles on it and installed a cooler when new and have changed the fluid/filter at 18,000 miles. Thanks all.....
