I have heard rave reviews from many people on this site about the splitfire wires, but im guessing that everybody has the V6 with those because when I called a parts store they said that they dont make a splitfire set for my car. Soooooo, my question is what did all you V8 guys do for wires? are the Splitfire wires that great that i should buy one of the kits that you splice yourself? or are there better kits from Taylor, Accel, Magnacore, Jacobs, or what? What do you guys recommend?

Billy, I had the same problem you do. I ended up going to Pep Boys and buying their brand, which is endorsed by Nascar for 40 somethin bucks. They are temporary until I can get a set from JAcobs Electronics. They are the only company that I know of that makes wires for the V8

www.oemfordparts.com sells a universal wire set for a 302, they're 9mm Ford Motorsport wires. The site isn't that well laid out, and there's no info as to whether it'll fit an Explorer or not. Nor have I ordered from these guys, or know anything about them. Id appreciate any info I could get on them, though, as I was thinking about picking up these wires for my '96 XLT V-8.

i'm pretty sure the splitfire's are copper...i just installed mine a few days ago and the radio's fine, i have the V6...i've heard good things about accels and taylors...just heard though...are you going to change plugs too? i dont know if they have bosch P+4's or not for the V8, but i would get them if they are made for it. i got the P+4's and the splitfires and it idles smoother and it just seems to run smoother than before..

thanks for the reply EMStaxi, but im wondering what you looked at? I havent checked to see if accel or the others makes a kit so i dont know about them. The parts store that i called carried Taylor racing wires for 55 bucks for my car, but i havn't heard anything about them. He said that a lot of racers use them. Can anyone reccomend them. Also i think i heard somewhere on this site that the Jacobs wires weren't that good because they were either copper and have a high resistace or that they reccomend that you use copper spark plugs. Can anyone verify this or help me out? mayby another brand?

How about the Bosch wires? Has anyone used them? I saw them at Autozone and the specs on the box seems promessing.

Bill D, I also have the V8, Have you checked with Explorer Express? I haven't talked to them yet, but they do carry them for the V8. However, the brand and the price reminds a mystery in the catalog though. If anyone know about this info, let me know. I'll might check with Splitfire soon though.

I recently installed the Bosch + 4 plugs on my Explorer (1998 XLT V8), with a new generic set of 8mm wires (which I received free from a friend and are temporary until I can afford the Jacob's wires). However, you may be unable to find the Bosch + 4 plugs for your truck. I had to purchase a set for the 1993 Mustang Cobra model. I checked the Splitfire website and noticed how the plugs for the 93 Cobra and 98 Explorer are the same model. Then at Pep Boys, I checked several other models that were offered for both vehicles. The Bosch + 4 was only listed under the Cobra though, so I took a chance and purchased them for my truck, they fit fine and after two weeks I have no complaints. I even notice a slight power increase in the mid to high RPM range.
