Hi Guys,

Does anyone know of a garage that will perform a smoke test please? Preferably in the Yorkshire / North Area but i'll travel!!

(After 2 hours hunting down the loud hiss after blipping the throttle using Carb Cleaner and a Hollow Pipe i still can't find the leak..... :(

easy home made smoke generator

I also could not find anybody in my area who would do this so I made my own out of a tin and a plumbers smoke pellet and a hair dryer

the 'smoke pellet' (sorry I don't know the real name) came from Plumbbase, not sure what plumbers use them for but if you light it it creats a great deal of smoke for about 4 minuites.

So start with a tin with a lid (i.e. golden syrup tin), make a hole in the fixed end about 6mm dia, with a smaller hole in the lid. The size of this hole is found by trial and error once you have finished.

Next take your wife's (or your own ) hair dryer and gaffer tape the fixed end of the tin with the big hole to the end of the hair dryer. Make sure it is one that has a cold setting.

So now you have what looks like a big silencer on your hair dryer.

Using a big blob of blue tack stick the smoke pellet to the inside of the tin so that it is upright when you are holding your hair dryer by the handle
Light the smoke pellet and put the lid on, start up the hair dryer and 'adjust' the smoke output by making the output hole bigger or if you have a fancy hair dryer vary the fan speed.

A word of advice, you don't want too much smoke so don't be tempted to make the output hole too big, I got my best results from a thin but thick stream of smoke so you can see where it is being sucked into.

There you have it, a DIY smoke gun, cheap to make and use, I think I paid £1.20 for 8 smoke pellets.

My wife refused to let me have her's so I bought a cheap on in Tesco's for £3.99

cheers

Jim that's genius! My wife read it and offered me her hairdryer to use! (she wants a new one like her friend's got.....Hairdryer Envy.) It may come down to this but after hours of "Hunt The Hiss" I'm that depressed I'm willing to throw money at a garage if I can find one....., which isn't looking likely at the mo! Then it'll be hairdryer time!
