OK...the old girl ran a very long time after my last plea for help here resulted in fine answers (and solutions, thankyouverymuch!). But I suspect she has come to the end of her road. I post this only in the hope that she can be resurrected.

1996 XLT 4.0 Autotrans w/ - I know, I know - about 225k miles
Issue: Starts fine, goes into first fine, 2nd is just a constant whine upwards without gear shift BUT...if you leave off the gas a moment and reapply, she'll skip on up to 3rd and toodle along fine.

As an aside, I never really knew how important that 2nd gear was in the whole driving thing. Ahem.

So, I am thinking about my search here and the "surge" issue mentioned over and over. And about how the valve body replacement seemed to be the favorite treatment. But, my friends, it's an awful lot of info to digest and I am fearful of spending the $150 on the body and the time and irritated husband and cursing the repair will entail.

I am kind of asking you guys - do you think it is worthwhile? Everyone else is dismissing her - "she gave you a lot of miles without trouble..." or "just how much are you going to waste on that thing?" - but the thing is this: she's my first car. AND the only one the dogs fit in. AND I cannot really afford a car payment these days with the economy being what it is. I want her back. I want to try and get another year out of her.

Should I try the valve body? If so, how do I know which to order?
Do you think I am a complete moron for even thinking the valve body is a fix for this issue when what I really need is a new transmission?
Is my husband a saint for letting me use his truck all the time?
Is he a rotten devil for telling me to sell her for parts?
WHAT SHOULD I DO?!

Seriously, guys - you are an amazing resource of goodness, smarts, and love for a vehicle that is one of the best made, period. No matter what, thanks for letting me at least vent here about the old girl...

You have a 4R55E transmission. You have two options. You could rebuild the valve body yourself or buy a rebuilt valve body. There is a sticky thread on the top of the transmission section called the 5R55E valve body rebuild diary. Follow the instructions, and use the proper tools without taking any shortcuts. The second option is to contact Donny from WWW.CentralValveBodies.Com. They give Explorer Forum members a discount. A cheaper place to buy it from is WWW.800700Tran.Com. I don't know if it's used or rebuilt, but you could find out.

Thx! Was going to use the CentralValveBodies but didn't know what to order. Def using the rebuilt. Really appreciate the response!!
