my 2003 explorer sport trac 8500 miles had a horrible marble rattling around noise at start up. thanks to the explorer forum i changed the two timming chain trenchers and put new metal o rings. i did the job and did not run the truck for 3 weeks.

i started it and looked for leaks. huge oil leak under the truck. very fast drip almost to the point of a steady stream. after turning off the engine its a very slow drip. i am figuring its residual oil dripping but it did leave a small puddle sitting last night on some cardboard about the size of a fist.

most of the oil seems to be comming from the mount of the starter. the rest from the center of where the bell housing meets the engine.

turned back to the forem and searched. found that the tensioner leak check them neither are leaking (used new o rings and tourq to spec)

turned back to the forem and searched. found that the oil filter adapter leaks. I check that and it does not appear to be leaking.

turned back to the forem and searched. found that the valve cover gaskets or PCV valve could be leaking. checked and it does not appear that they are leaking.

what can leak that much oil? what would cause it to start leaking like that after doing the tensioner or is it just bad luck that with the truck sitting for so long the rear main seal started leaking.

Tranz meets the bel housing and a little oil does not appear to come from here. also i check its oil not tranz fluid.

on the left you can see the starter mount and where most of the oil is coming from

I know this is past, but did you ever figure it out? I have a similar leak I been trying to trace down.
