Always had an interest in the Explorer ever since I learned to drive at 16 y/o, in 2002 on a 96 Limited V6. It was the orthapedic beige on beige color. Pretty nice ride.
In February 2017, I purchased a 96 Ford Explorer V8 AWD Eddie Bauer from way up in the mountains of NC. Super super rusted bad (they brine the roads). A whole $700 - bought for the motor. Towed it back home. Drove it 1,000 miles after putting a couple of cheap ball joints on. And found the motor burned no oil, and ran like a champ (I'm putting this into my 89 Colony Park wagon - mo powah!!!) Sold the transmission and transfer case out of it.
Fast forward to last week I bought from Copart a 1997 Explorer Limited V8 2WD, black on gray, light hit up front. Needs sheet metal work up front, no biggie - you'll see the thread in due time.
Then today I bought a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer Monterrey AWD V8 - believe it has every single option except heated seats. No rust anywhere - nice clean southern car. Has 150K. Stack of maintenance - its a shame cause original owners, they bought it from the Lincoln/Mercury dealer brand new October 2000. It needs work too, but more from a mechanical perspective - like a timing cover gasket leak (per the WO). This is a resale car - hopefully i'll make a few hundred bucks.
Oh and about me? I'm in my early 30s, work for an insurance software company - and love to wrench as it doesn't involve staring at a computer screen hours on end!
This website has been a great resource to read and learn about the Explorer - enjoyed reading.
