Very stiff shift lever - 2003 Sport Trac XLT 2WD

I am waiting to pick up a new-to-me 2003 Sport Trac. They are supposed to fix a very stiff shift lever.

I am hoping folks can shed light on the possible/likely causes of this.

Bump it up.

Might just need to open up the steering column and lube the linkages.
