Guys, a while back when the weather got cold, I posted that sometimes when I drove the truck, it would randomly start making a whining whirring sound from the drivetrain. It seems that it only happens after I go in reverse, and back forward????

When Im driving with the whining.. the whine increases in pitch and freq. when I step on the gas.

I slowed down to a near stop and the whine went away.

When I pressed the 4x4 button, the whine goes away???

ANy ideas at all what this can be? I just had a rebld, they messed up the first time and rebuilt it because a pin slipped in the tranny, making it go in R and D at the same time. I dont think it's the tranny, but it might be?? It ONLY happens in cold weather, Last time it happened it was about 40's.. now its 40's again.. so Im assuming that the cold weather has an effect on the lubrication of this part maybe????

what is it? my hubs? my tranny? my transfercase???? any ideas at all?

I know EXACTLY what you mean. Mine does the same thing only in cold weather. Very annoying. I can't tell if it's the engine or the transmission.

Ill let you know if I find out.., but I doubt we'd have the same problem wtih our trannies, especially since I just had a rbld. I really think its the transfercase or engine or something to do with the 4x4.

Someone also suggested the powersteering pump makes that sound, but I dont see how the 4x4 would effect that.

Throw me an email Jason, Steve9881@home.com
maybe we can figure this out...

I think i figured it out... I had my dad ride with me and listen as I drove around.. I got it to happen about 5-6 times... finally he stuck his head out the window (that was nice of him considering windchill w/o the car traveling @ 40mph is 30 degrees)....

anyway.. He said it definately sounded like it was coming from the front end... and when I opened the window, it sounded a lot different than from inside the car... Im going to try to replacee the hubs soon, ill let you know how it goes...

Steve,
I think in an earlier thread you were saying you needed brakes and I had offered to help ya out when I was in town. Well, if it is the hubs you could replace the brakes when the hubs are off. Also I would repack the wheel bearings...it might be them?
