For the past couple of months, my 2004 Eddie Bauer Explorer has started vibrating when coasting. When I step on the gas and apply some torque, it goes away. At first it was light, and I thought it was just bumps in the road, but lately it has been getting a lot worse. Any ideas?

Also, there is a whine from the rear at higher speeds...maybe they are related?

Thanks!

the whine is a notorious issue with the X. I had a new gear and pinion and fluid change done to my 03 mounty @ 60K. There's a TSB about the issue, so if you have an extended warranty they'll cover it, otherwise its like a 1200$ repair; mostly in labor as its a 6.5hr job.

as far as the vibration, check tire pressure. Also, when was the last time your tires were balanced and rotated? Could also be wheel bearings.

On my '04 i had warped rotors but they only really vibrated during braking. Is it in the seat of the pants (rear) or steering wheel (front)? What speeds does it do it?
How many miles?

I actually just had my brakes replaced, and the rotors were fine.

It only really happens when going 50 and above. City driving is fine. When I'm coasting off an exit on a highway though, it has been doing it. Lately though it's gone from a vibration, to almost a thunking coming from the floor.

The only thing I could think of is that the 4X4 is engaging/disengaging...but I'm not sure.

Well it could also be Tires, Axle, CV joints. I'd check all your half shafts - 4 of them see if there is any slop . . ..
Usually Wheel bearing make noise not vibrations.

A bad bearing will do both. Because if the bearing is bad there will be play in the wheel which will cause vibration. But you are right, if there isn't a noise there shouldn't be a bearing problem.
