Hi...I have a 1999 Explorer XLT 4×4 with the 4.0 Sohc motor. I'm trying hard to figure out what could possibly be causing a hard clanking under my feet and a vibration when accelerating and sometimes at higher speeds. Well, it's more noticeable then. It's constant though, just doesn't feel as bad. The clanking happens when I hit bumps or even just roads with uneven spots. Here's what's been recently replaced or done in The past year: Motor swap, New tires, wheel balance, front upper control arms and ball joints, front lower ball joints, shocks, alternator, oil pan gasket, and an Inspection done this month. Will need rear brake pads and rear sway bar links soon, according to the inspector. I've been told my issue could possibly be a U joint. I'm not sure what to look for or listen for to see if that is in fact, my issue. Could I ask you all for some help? :)

Check your sway bar links or bushings. They can cause wierd clunks or even your wheel hub assembleys.
Just try to rock your car and go under and listen

Sounds like the symptoms of a bad U-joint, not I joint. ;)

Or your lower control arm bushings will cause the clanking sound also

The rear seat bar links squeak but, the inspector never said anything about the front ones needing to be replaced anytime soon. Control arms too. The lower ball joints were what failed inspection so I had them replaced. Maybe I'm naive to think they wouldn't pass something with dangerous parts on it...or is that not dangerous? Sorry to sound like I don't know what I'm talking about but, I kinda don't lol
