I put an avic D1 navigation in my 01 explorer sport and to get the navigation to be more accurate and have some other functions work it is supposed to be hooked up to the vss wire. I read in another thread that the vss was only up until 1992 so is there another wire that I could attach to and where is it if so.
thanks

You were told wrong.

Your vehicle has a VSS. First place to look is in the factory radio harness. Many Ford radios have VSS for speed sensitive volume. It's also located at the GEM, (easy to get to from the radio opening) the overhead console has it, and so does the message center. Those are the three easiest to get to...but there are more locations. This is one of the easiest vehicles there is to find and utilize a VSS signal.

By the way...the VSS wire is USUALLY gray with a black stripe. But don't hold my feet to the fire on that as they had some wiring changes and I'm not certain of when they changed.

I tried hooking it up to a wire but I think I may have chosen the wrong wire since now my speedometer moves to the volume of my music. I'll see if i get put a video up later its pretty funny but apparently i picked the wrong one. There was none in the radio harness but I saw one to the right that went into like a small black computer box.

its a really crappy video i took on my phone... it seems like it runs off the midtones for some reason.

I would say you have found the VSS wire in the vehicle and hooked it up to the wrong wire out of the stereo. I don't know how else that could happen. But you're playing with fire here. There are a LOT of VERY expensive modules that use the VSS. Make certain of what you're doing or you could spend a ton of money in a heartbeat.

Looks as though you hooked up an audio output on the radio to the VSS... REMOVE THE WIRE ASAP!

What color wire from the radio did you hook up to the VSS wire??? Should have been the PINK wire from the HU, to the Gry/Blk VSS wire in the truck...

Not sure if you have the manual for the radio, so HERE it is.

With any luck, you haven't done any damage to the PCM or other components that utilize the VSS signal wire, but time will now tell...

I removed the wire and all seems good. It was the pink wire from the HU to the gray/black. I got the HU used and it seemed like the wiring harness had been messed with since it was like a tangled mess that I had to sort through so its possible who ever had it before me may have switched the wire around. So i think i may just do without hooking it up unless I can find a wiring diagram of how the HU harness should be from somewhere.
thanks for the help.

I'll look around, I used to have the pin-out sheet for the D1, I'm sure it's buried on one of my hd's or cds somewhere... when i find it, I'll post it up, unless someone else comes along with it first...

Thanks a lot that would help a bunch. Cause who ever had it before me also tried to wire it so it shows that the emergency brake is always on so you can have like the movie playing and gps options available with out having to put the e-brake on and apparently they didn't do it right so the warning still pops up every time.
thanks again.

Ok, I pulled the info from the service manual for the pinouts, and also got you a pic of the correct way to do the "bypass"...
