Have a 2007 xlt sports trac with the 6 disc cd radio. Would like to replace the radio with one with nav, bluetooth and usb port. Would also like to add the steering controls to the right side. Left side has the cruise control bottons.
Is it possible to do this? And how much trouble would it be to do it.
Have checked some radios online and they have single or double din?? No idea what that means? Which would i need?

You'll want a double din. This should explain the difference.

As for adding the buttons, that will end up being more complicated. I don't know if all the wiring is already in the dash and if it is I doubt you will be able to just add buttons to the steering wheel. I bet it would be easier to just buy a steering wheel off ebay and connect it to the HOPEFULLY already existing wiring. Here is a black wheen for $85

Metra makes an aftermarket steering wheel control but they are garbage. I wouldn't even bother. As for the rest, it is easily done. Just make sure you buy the metra wiring kit as well as the can bus adapter. The dimming, speed control, switch that keeps the radio on after you turn off the key, and a few other feeds are controlled by the ecm via the can bus feed. The adapter switches them all back to analog so that aftermarket stereos can use them without loosing any functionality. All together the installation kit and accessories should run you around 50 bucks if you are a internet savvy thrifty shopper.

Check out 4dtech.com, they do factory upgrades. I just upgraded the radio in my 2010 F350 to nav with a back up camera. Their kits have everything in it to make a complete factory install for a bunch of different Fords, including the steering wheel controls. I'm not sure if they have anything for the 2nd gen ST/4th gen explorers though. And for what it's worth they are by far the easiest and most helpful company I've ever worked with. I've always hated the look of aftermarket radios so a factory screen was the only option for me.
