Just got back from vacation, and the yearly break down of my truck happened once again. I need a new water pump and was wondering if there were any options (better?) than a stock replacement. Also, how much of a pain is it to replace?
Thanks
Michael

It's not that hard to replace. You will need to goto autozone and rent a ford fan removal tool (it's pretty easy to use). Disconet the hoses to and from it, un bolt and replace. Word of advice...dont' overtighten the bolts they WILL break off, i did but luckly they were easy to get out. I dont' think there's anything wrong about the stock waterpump..i guess you could get a polishing kit and make it look better but i've never heard of a problem with it performance wise (but i could be wrong ;) ).

Good luck,
CP

pump it up

I would say the Motorcraft factory pump is one of the better options. I've installed two pumps from NAPA over the years (one no-name made in Poland, one GMB), and while they're okay for the price savings, the Motorcraft would be my choice if you could get it for slightly more. Ford Parts Network has it listed for $73.82.

Definitely borrow the fan removal tool from Autozone, it saves a ton of time and headaches. The replacement isn't very hard with the right tools (10mm wrenches, sockets, extensions). Just be sure to scrape all of the old gasket off, and use the Permatex gasket sealer made for coolant gaskets to prevent any leaks. Get a Motorcraft thermostat and install that while you're at it, and use new coolant if its been in there for awhile.
