Water Temperature Sensor and Coolant Temperature Sensor

There are two sensors on top of the thermostat, a coolant temp. sensor to the right and a water temp. sensor to the left. What does each do (aside from the obvious)?

anyone? Im guessing one is for the eec and one is for the guage (seeing as how the water temp sensor comes with a guage).
