Hey All, Well I dumped a whole buttload of Tranny fluid giong down the highway this last weekend for the second time. And since the general concensis seems to be, front pump seal, I decided to replace it. It took a while, but I finally got the beast dropped, and when I pulled the TC out of bellhousing I noticed some wear to the shaft that sits inside the seal. I,m guessing this means that I have bigger underlying proglems other than just a bad seal. I have kinda briefly looked over a couple posts concerning a bushing behind the flywheel that apparently goes bad. the wear/ damage is not real severe it just looks like a scratch/ shallow gouge circling the shaft. I'm wondering how deep I should dig into this, I really don't want to do a rebuild right now, but if there is some fairly simple checks I could do while I have it out it would make me feel better, I am picking up a rebuildable A4LD in a couple weeks to do at my leisure and would like to get this one back on the road. I am new at transmission work, I have a ASTG manual on the way but anyone who has any pointers or similar experience I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Bruce.

Operahouse is very knowledgable on the A4LD. Try PMing him, or search for posts w/his name and you should find lots of informative tranny posts.

I cant help you yet, but I had my trans dump a boat load of fluid this afternoon, so Im going to pull it soon and find out what the deal is with the seal and crank bushing et al. It was rebuilt about 30000 miles ago.

Anything that recieves a seal should be smooth, if you an polish out the scratch with some emery cloth or sandpaper so the seal has a smooth surface to ride on would be a good idea. A quick fix until you rebuild.

Good Luck
