After putting in a new gas tank and fuel sending unit about 8 months ago, I have noticed that my engine cuts out every once in a while. It only happens when my fuel gauge reads less than 1/4 of a tank and only when I take a sharp curve or anything that makes my Explorer shake around a lot. When I do this, the engine cuts out for a half a second and then jumps right back to life. Could the the gas be sloshing around so much in the tank that the sending unit is sucking some air? I haven't gotten a chance to get it up on a lift to drop the tank, so I just keep at least 1/4 tank of fuel in it until I can drop the tank and look. Has anyone ever had this problem or know what could be causing it? Thanks.

Does anyone have any idea what this problem could be?

Sounds like fuel sloshing around and the pump cannot pick it up by what you are describing.

I have the same problem, I take out the tank
and notice that in the return line (inside the tank)
there is a small tip that is broken.
Could be that what's causing it?? Thanks.

This sounds like TSB# 00-20-1

Hesitation On Acceleration or Turning - Lack of Fuel Pressure

Explorer/Monutaineer Vehicles built through 8/15/2000 and Expedition/Navigator Vehicles Built through 6/30/2000

1997-2000 Expedition
1997-2001 Explorer
1998-2000 Navigator
1997-2001 Mountaineer

A hesitation on acceleration or while turning may be felt on some vehicles. This may be caused by fuel pump cavitation due to fuel sloshing away from the filter sock in the fuel tank reservoir.

Ive had this problem before but it had nothing to do with the fuel...Check All the cables coming off your battery......
