I have a 99 Sport 4.0 OHV auto. I first noticed the intermittent ( usually more so than not ) noise when I was driving. Under acceleration, sometimes at only 2500rpms, other times at higher rpms, it makes a loud whirl that gets louder than makes a pop noise and goes away and does it again and again until you let off. Recently I've noticed it doing it ( less often than when in drive, i think ) while in neutral.
I originally thought it was the auto4wd turning on, but now that it does it in neutral im stumped.
