Weird Tranny Problem

I have a 92 Explorer, 4.0 / Automatic / 4 WD . It has some Strangegegege goings on in the transmission.

Strange in the fact that one minute I had all gears and when stopping at my mail box, I lost all gears.

1 hour later my son told me I had all gears.

I went out , took it for a drive, it seemed OK and at about 2 miles , I lost all gears again.

I asked a mechanic and he said it probably needs a rebuild.

Can the tranny go that quick ?

By the way , it's a tranny out of a Aero Star.

Can anyone diagnose this ?

Would installing a manual shift 4WD tranny be a good move? I really don't want to put more than the vehicle is worth just in the tranny. It's an old truck.

It sounds like it's low on fluid.

Another possibility could be leaking filter O rings. Did you use the correct filter for a 4WD (this is the deep version)?

Yup , correct filter.

Could it be a modulator issue or does the modulator only controll the shifting ?

Even though the filter is the correct one, it's still possible that the O rings are leaking.
