...that you could even get an Explorer without keyless entry. Apparently, my XLS proved you can.

I bought a set of key fobs and when I tried to put the Explorer into programming mode, nothing happened. I did the 8-on cycle several times before heading to the back to see if the computer was in the jack box. Nope.

You can even get them with manual windows/locks although rare.

My first 1997 Explorer didn't have keyless entry. My 1997 Mercury Mountaineer has almost every option, minus the sunroof and backup sensors.
 












My '97 has no "chip key" and no keyless entry/alarm.
 






My '97 Sport has no key-chip ('98 was the first year of PATS) but it has keyless entry, the door key-pad, keyless remote and the factory alarm.
