Ok, I've had my 1991 Explorer for over 2 years and I've never seen this light till a couple weeks ago it popped up. For a while it would just come on occasionally and I would just shut the engine off and re start and the light would stay off for a while. But, yesterday it came on and won't go off at all.

Can anyone tell me what this means?

check your brake fluid level, may be low or the float could be stuck in the bottom of the master cylinder. also check the tension on the parking brake pedal, could be loose and tripping the brake light.

Chances are, if it's flashing on and off and then resetting when you restart the car, it's brake fluid. Check your rear wheel cylinders to see if either are leaking. Exact same thing happened to me 2 months ago. Replaced my rear cylinders and all is good again.

Also check the brake line connection going into the front calipers. My connection was loose and each time I stepped on the brake, it pushed the fluid out through there. I agree with checking the back brake lines too and it wouldn't hurt to inspect the brake lines for leaks
