91 E.B. 4x4 Explorer
Hey, I have a 91 explorer . the 4x4 didn't work so I took off shift motor and found the crushed bushing . I replaced it with a homemade one. Put it back together it didn't work at first. Then I didn't do anything else to it , but one day I pushed button and it worked. It worked in 4 high and 4 low. It worked for 2 weeks. Now I get nothing again . The brown wire coming out of transfer case looks burnt right at the case but not really burnt just black a little. Does anyone know what this wire is for or does.

Thats the infamous "Brown Wire" .. do a search for "Brown Wire mod" and you'll get plenty of results about it. But basically, that is the wire that allows power to transfer to the front wheels. If that wire is burnt or cut, your vehicle can not get into Four Wheel Drive.

Brown wire doesn't work on 91-94.. Crazy new moderator :D

LOL but its still there, its the same wire that engages the clutch system -- or at least thats what I remember when I had a 1354 electric shift for a few days.

On a 1354, it's not the same thing as the 44-05. 44-05, yes, it controls the transfer case lockup. On the 1st gens, it's something else. IIRC, the 1st gens use the brown wire to power an electromagnetic clutch used to synch the front driveshaft speed before the transfer case shifts the lockup collar.

Sounds like I'm learning more than anyone else in this thread :D Thanks GIJOECAM!

Umm, I thought I answered that pretty clearly.... looks like English on my screen, but maybe I'm typing in tongues again...
