I heard this morning that Kazaa is giving up lists to the recording industry of people who download music and 4 college students are being sued by the recording industry for 1 million for downloading music.

Is this true, is there really any risk for normal users (i can't imagine the recording industry filing millions of lawsuits when half the users would be under 18), by normal users I mean people who download a few songs for themselves.

If they do try to sue most people there damages would be the cost of a couple of CD's so I don't know how they could justify a million against some college students.

I hope not. I would be classified as one of those normal users. I've downloaded probably ~25, just because I don't know the artist, just the title, and I have no idea where to get the CD.

I'm Screwed if they do...Ive had over 1000 songs atleast...lol hopfuly its a rumor

I haven't heard anything either. But man I hope it's not true!

Isn't it something all this downloaded music in the news comes at a time when most bands have been putting out pure crap lately. Like Metallica for instance. Their last two albums bombed and they never once thought that they just put out sucky music now? Instead they blamed people that downloaded other bands music. What a bunch of mouks.

Unfortunately this is true. We were just discussing this in my cyber law class. They are picking on the little people to try to intimidate everyone else. if they want to prove a point they should pick on people there own size like the ISP's. They have the money and the lawyers to make it a fair fight.

Recording Industry :shoot: :shoot:

There was a whole thing on it on techtv today. Its nothing but scare tactics and idle threats.
I dont know about the rumor mill but im sure its making it out to be alot bigger of a deal than it really is.
They arent giving out users information.
the RIAA is just im'ing people on Kazaa making threats.
its a bunch of BS if u ask me.

grrrrrrrrrr :fire:

recording industry :hammer:

kazaa is how i get most, like 95% of my music. i really can't imagine them suing every single person that has it, i'll delete the damn thing before i get sued.

see thats there hope- people will freak out and uninstall the software and discontinue its use entirely.
thus they acheive the effect they want without any action

The "industry" will spend millions and millions of dollars on high priced lawyers and somehow destroy KaZaa!!

That being said...............

A new P2P powerhouse will startup within about 2 weeks of that happening. How much did they spend to destroy Napster? Did that accomplish anything?

They can do whatever they want, but they can't stop the technology that allows an individual to give another individual a computer file through a P2P connection. It just isn't possible.

damned net monster ate my first attempt at a post here..

Those kids getting sued were running their own file sharing network, not just using Kazaa. They had MILLIONS of songs and movies. I think its mainly a scare tactic here. Theres no way these kids have billions like they are asking for nor will they stand a chance in hell of getting it.

From what ive seen they are only going after bigtime users, those sharing lots of files. They cant go after everyone thats ever taken a few songs. I use Kazaa mainly to preview music or to get singles and things I otherwise wouldnt bother buying so they arent really losing any business from me. Just move all your shared stuff outta that folder I think youll be fine.

The entertainment group got themselves into this mess charging too damn much. I mean a CD single is like $10 and the whole album is $15? WTF...If I can buy CDs and jewel cases for $0.75 each, you know they get em for less than quarter. Even a piece of **** performer now seems to sell at least a million (hence the new diamond ratings and so on). When they decide not to screw their own customers here things wouldnt be so bad.

Copy protecting discs now? what a crock of ****, I payed for the CD and have a LEGAL RIGHT TO COPY IT FOR MY OWN USE. Not that people would stop downloading, but if they had a reasonably priced service with anything worth downloading Id use it. Itd be faster and no virus worries. But then you still cant get ahold of the unreleased stuff, which is what I love finding.

Wow, I got a bit off topic...ohwell

they (the record industry) are stupid... they will not, and can not stop this....they would have to prove that the people they are sueing, do not buy cds at all..which would be somewhat hard..i mean come on...this is crazy..like someone said, they aren't going to stop this, if they do it will only be for a short time until another goes online...they need to accpet the fact that p2p sharing is here...and stop blaming the slow economy on other things, and accept that people won't or can't buy cds because they are just too expensive....

I personaly will not buy CD's for what they have done.. I also do not listen to Mitalica ya i spelled it wrond.. i dont care i use to love there songs.. i wont listen to anything of theres anymore due to what they did... long live Napster!!!!

cool its about time i remember before they shut down napster i used to get endless emails and icq messages saying please save napster . i made a generic message paying out on the thieving b--tards. hope fully they will not only be sued it will become a crimminal offence and they will be jailed

I got a message while I was on Kazaa from someone threatening to stop sharing my 4600+ files to everyone...so i ended up just stopping the file swap out of precaution...i serously doubt anything will happen however

Still, that would scare the piss outta me I think.....

I would of told them to get a spoon, because they where about to eat my ass. Prove that i don't have the cd, my house was broken into a month ago and they where all stolen. I'd like to see them TRY to sue all the Kazaa users, at 3:00am their is like 2 milion users online.

Ain't it funny how we get pissed because of the threat of taking our free stuff?

I have mixed feelings. I have downloaded some songs and I enjoy listening to them like I would the radio. I'm not a cd buyer, I probably buy 2 cd's a year so I'm definately not hurting the record companies by downloading a song every now and then that I'd like to hear.

my rationale is if I can hear it on the radio then I can download it for a few weeks or months.

but then again us getting irritated becasue they're threatening is like getting mad at the shop owner that locks his doors when he goes home at night to prevent us from taking free candy and drinks.

That comment will make me unpopular.

'Crew it!

About a week ago I was in Future Shop (Canadian Circut City) looking for some DVD's. I wondered over to the CD section, I was looking at the prices and they where like $20.00 fo a disk that has maby 1 song that I want on it. I would be willing the give Kazza a small fee for it's serv, but as soon as you do that the users on it would dorp phenomenally (sp) and i would not be able to find the music i want.

I don't think anything will happen. Personally I use Kazaa for programs and movies. Yea I've got over 2,000 songs but I rarley get songs anymore. Mainly just software because I believe that is way over priced also. I mainly get my songs for a DJ that is on the radio and a few clubs around town so I don't think that's all bad, I mean he's promoting their music by playing it so I acutally think it's a good thing.

Yea, I use Kazza more for things you can't buy anywhere. Sound bites, homemade animations, movie quotes, television shows, etc...
