What is needed to cut a new key?

The wife just called and said that she lost the keys to the new X, and we only have one set. What all is needed for the dealership to cut a new key? If I recall correctly for my 95 all they needed was the VIN, but I am not sure what is needed for an '02. And I am probably looking at what, $200 for the key and cutting it at the stealership?

yeah, ur looking at about $200.... And i believe all they need is the VIN, call the stealership and see

I believe you need VIN# and your title (to prove the vehicle belongs to you).

Worst case, you have to get it towed to the dealer, they can cut the key from the VIN but it has to be programmed into the PCM to work, so they need the truck and key to do it - PATSII. They are going to burn you on the price of a key but you might as well get two while your there as it takes AT LEAST TWO keys to program a third and buy that one on fleabay. But i wouldn't want to do one then go back for the second key later they will get you twice. Keyfob, fleabay for sure, you don't need any to program a new one.
Look for Focus all in one keyfobs they work too.

Might want to call around first, some dealer charge an hour (yea right) some 30min (the walk to the truck takes longer than to program the key).
Now it would be worth it to call a couple of local locksmith's and see if they can come to the truck to program it ???? But they might not be able to cut from the VIN. . .
My guess is you will wind up at the stealership.

This thread really makes me want to go get a Milan (Fusion) key off ebay so I have a third.

shadowless127 you might be right i think it was a Fusion key, search, there is a post somewhere. . .
I wouldn't wait, get the third key while you can. I found out the hard way, i got two keys to begin with but then somehow one of the keys got caught on the backside of the steering wheel of the jeep and snapped in half leaving me with one key and a trip to the dealer. Thats when i learned my lession, now i have 3 keys that work just in case. . .
