Okay..I had my tranny done last June..blah blah blah story of my life. Now I apparently need a transfer case.

How much should this job cost me? I've got quotes of 2 grand..(canadian)...what should it cost me???

Holy moly! $2k? Is that parts and labor?
Are the parts new or used?

I would think you should be able to get a used transfercase and have it put in for under $1000.

Thats pats and labour..and a badly used transfer case. :( Apparently used transfer cases are like 1000$???? I dunno..I think this place is screwing me over personally!

I seriously think its my U Joints. :( I'm thinking in the 'worst' terms though..and seeing what kind of money I Have to shell out IF it is in fact the transfer case.

Give us an ideal of what is happening with your T-case or U-joints. I probably cant help you too much there but there are plenty of people on here that can tell you anything about them.

Okay...when I go to break..and the truck starts coasting...I get a fairly loud thud underneath the vehicle. I have had this ever since I got it..but it has gotten progressively worse over time..and I thought it was the Tranny making the noise. SO I took it in last friday, and they test drove it..and lifted it up..and diagnosed it as a bad transfer case..and rear diferential.

He tooke me under the truck, and there was a rod that went from the transfer case, straight into the r4ear diferential...and it could move around. He blamed the noise on this moving rod..and said in order for it to stop I'd have to do the transfer case and the rear.

Also there was a tiny bit of oil leaking from the case..but I never see any leaks on my driveway or anything.

He quoted me 2 grand PER repair..and sent me on my way.

Now I called my regular mechanic, (who is looking at it friday).and my mechanic said that the U Joints cause this rod to move...and that is all that needs to be replaced.

Does this sound right?

I am thinking worst case scenario..how muhc will it actually cost if I did in fact need a transfer case?

ALSO..I dont use 4x4 at al..and neither did the man before me..I am just puzzled!!!! :(

Also could it be leaking...because they worked on it last June, and failed to replace a seal? Because they need to take it off to get to the tranny right? My Dad thinks they left the seal off on purpose last JUne..so I would have to pay another 800 bucks LABOR to take the darn thing off.

That sounds like u-joints, i would go to a place that has a good reputation and see what they say.

This place is very reputable :( But I think they see a young girl coming..:(

Haha...it happens not only to young girls. Me too sometimes... Anyways...from what you said, it sounds like it's just the U-joint. Make them proof to you that there's a problem with the transfer case. I said this because transfer case isn't even activated when it's in 2WD mode.

Im agreeing with Billy, it sounds to me like the U-joints are to blame for your clunking noises.

Replace your u-joints somewhere else, spend maybe $125, and never ever go back to that place again, and warn your friends about it too.

Good..call!!! Thanks guys! I have a pla ce charging me..80 bucks for a uJoint..I'm assuming there's 2???

They said..theyd have to pull it all apart to see for sure if anything is wrong with it....SURE..go ahead..like I have 800 bucks to just give them.so they can take my truck apart! Yeah right.

Yes there are two. There's also another one or two on your front driveshaft, but that is evidently not your problem.

I was thinking American dollars, $80 Canadian (including installation) is probably a fair price per u-joint.

You have two u-joints on your back driveshaft (what you called the "rod"), one at the front where it connects to your perfectly fine transfer case that doesn't need replacing, and one in the rear where it connects to your perfectly fine differential that doesn't need replacing either.

Warn everyone you know to stay clear of that shop. While you are at it, get those thiefs to give you that estimate in writing and then turn it in to your local newspaper :D Have some fun with this and enjoy the $1,840 you just saved. :)

Aww you're a sweetheart!!!! :) I plan on actually writing the better business bureau about them!! AND the paper!!!! ;)

let us know if it was just the u joints...usually when i take something to a shop and they tell me that 2 or more things are bad that are conected to each other i get a 2nd opinon (im an 18 y.o kid) so they see me coming also lol

I've seen on those hidden camera news shows where they've caught mechanics squirting oil om things to make it look like a leak. I've agree that it's your ujoints. At least it's a much cheaper place to start. Go get 'em!

Oh for sure I will let you all know what it actually is. I have been griping for days about it..I am so upset my X is in such bad shape! She's my love! LOL :)

Haha...don't worry about it. That's what this forum is for! We all love helping people out. Once it's fixed, your X will be great again! :)

Thanks you guys are awesome. LOL Seriously like a dream. I had no idea a place like this existed lol
