I have seen these products around but I have never figured out what they are for. They look like mini air filters (couple inches long). They call them breathers. Can someone please explain?

in some areas they are illegal due to smog restrictions but they usually vent your crankcase to allow a few more extra ponies. some people also use them for filters to their trannys or diffs raised up in the engine compartment to resist taking on water in these parts. if water is past your hood i think you are screwed anyways

jimabena74 got it right on. I use them for breathers for my axles and t-case. BTW, the stock breathers for axles are right at the bumper line. Now mine are at the top of the hood. I usually find myself going through water that is over the bumper or right at it so it helps.

Do you have any pics that show how and where you ran the hoses to put the breather tubes under the hood? I am considering doing this but am wondering if it is worth the time. Also how much did it cost for all that hose and the breathers?
