I'm sure this question gets asked alot but I have not read anything about this topic yet.

As it sits now it's a bone stock 97 EB V-8 AWD with 54K. I am wanting to add some ponies. I can feal that the stock motor is restricted from some nice HP. It feels sluggish off the start but has some nice pickup in 2000 and up RPM range so here's what I am looking so far, now I know there mild mods but it should feel better than stock.

Flowmaster 50 series
Superchip
Cold Air intake

Whats a stock V-8 run in the 1/4 mile, anyone?

Thanks guys(gals).

I crank off a consistant 16.1-16.2's at about 85-86mph in our 00' 2wd 5.0 Mounty fully stock with full tank ect. Haven't been to the track in like 7 months. But last time it was quick enough to beat two Durango R/T's and a Civic Si.

As for the mods, with only an intake and true-dual exhaust my buddy cranked off 15.9 in the 1/4 in his 2wd 5.0 Explorer.

I'd say with your mods, high 15's would be easy, if your awd you might be just slightly slower but hardly noticeable.

I would recommend a 40 series Flowmaster though, the 50's aren't loud enough or aggressive enough for me on V8's;) That, or if you want to have a really unique sound compared to flows try a muffler from Magnaflow or CGS, www.cgsmotorsports.com , Magnaflows sound awsome on V8's and CGS mufflers are extremely deep and aggressive sounding. I heard a CGS equiped Lightning and couldn't believe how mean it was compared to the Flowmaster or Bassani setups on Lightnings.

The stock cam, exhaust, and headers are what really hold back the Explorer/Mounty 5.0's. Unfortunatley FMS headers are no longer made for Explorers and are impossible to find. But if you have an e303 cam installed along with an intake/filter, dual exhaust, and a shiftkit and chip you'd be good for high 14's-low 15's easily in the 1/4.

Superchips/Diablo are good, but I would also recommend the Apten chip, bjherron on this board can program a custom chip for your exact Explorer and for what mods you will be doing, I think his chips are based of the Diablo chip board. But his will produce much better numbers/power then any other chip and can easily reprogram it for you, I think theres a group purchase going on but I'm not sure. You can contact him at bjherron@apten-us.com , I would take his chip over any other any day of the week, do a search on here and you'll see how many people have installed one on their Explorers, go to this thread Dead Link Removed and you'll see Black Magic dynoed his Explorer with the Apten chip and has a dyno showing the awsome gains.

Thanks for the detailed mods list. That is what I was the answer I was looking for. I might come to you again with more questions sown the road man, Thanks!

Those 1/4 mile times are awesome. I can only pull a 17.2 with my 4x4 4.0L Ranger with most of the popular bolt ons. It's quicker than my X off the line but the X takes over after about 40MPH, thats when the V-8 power kicks in. Thanks again man!

I dont wanna depress you.. but I dont want to sound like I'm being a pain either..

so all I'll say is, dont get your hopes up TOO high on mods under $1000

Well you must have the OHV 4.0 in the Ranger which = Slow at drag racing. My SOHC X will pull off low 16s completely stock, so I can run with the 5.0s. I just wish the SOHC had the after-market the 5.0 has :p

16s? ha.. sounds like my 0-60 time :P
