What to watch out for in '97+?

OK, I'm a senior in high school, and my parents will soon buy me a car. The school I pick determines what I get because one is a 20 mile highway commute each way and the other one uses public transportation. If I get into the local school, (The Cooper Union) I will get an Explorer, if I go to the other school, I'll be getting a CRV because of the gas milage it gets. My question is what should I look out for when purchasing a '97 or newer V6 4x4 (probably nothing newer than a '00 because of the price). I'll find out if I get in in early April ( I hope I do because it's free and I'll get an Explorer) so I need to get all the info. Thanks for the help guys.

Thanks for the link man. I basically found what I was looking for. My main question was about whether to get a OHV or SOCH. I guess it's going ot be the OHV. My dad's '94 has it, and I never thought it was lacking power. Thanks again.
