Hmmmmmmmm.........

The "T" has always stood for the A4LD. On this year, I think it should have been a 4R44E. But you know what, it really doesn't matter much. The A4LD, 4R44E, 5R55E are basically the same transmission. They all take exactly the same pan gasket and filter. Is there a specific question you need this for?

I think you have the 4R55E. I have a '95 XLT and in the owners manual it says if the truck is an auto its the 4R55E. Also your sticker has the same tranny code as mine.

I actually posted this to get help on another thread. I wanted to see if that B&M electronic shift improver would work on my trans. I couldn't get a straight answer from any one looking there so I started a new one. If what is here is correct, then it should work w/ mine. thanx much!

is that true?..cuz I was looking at buying a pan gasket and filter for the tranny, and the auto part guy was looking at me funny when I wanted a kit for the "5 speed AUTOMATIC" for the explorer...I have the 5R55E, can I get the A4LD or the 4R44E transmission oil change kit?...

The 1996 code T is indeed the 4R55E. I know this because I did some research when looking at a 96 Sport.

The 4R55E and 5R55E are rated for more torque than the A4LD and 4R44E, so I assume they have stronger internals.

Bzz, I "think" the filter and gasket will interchange, at least between the 4R55E and 5R55E, and maybe between the others too.

I think that the filter may be slightly different for the 5R55E depending upon whether you have 2wd or 4wd. The manual shows that the pan is slightly different for 2wd vs. 4wd, and they asked me which one I had when I bought the filter and gasket kit at the dealer.

New filter

They changed the four speed into a 5 speed by changing the valve body and extra electric solenoids. Many parts are interchangable. There is a new improved American made glass fiber MicroFelt filter from SPX/FILTRAN. This same filter can be used in the A4LD, 4R44, 5R55E (#23921 for 4WD). There is also a short tube version for 2WD, thin plastic is easy to cut if you are unsure get the long. If you have shopped for filters previously, you will remember that the older 2WD versions got the filter element and the 4WD versions got just a metal screen. Evidently 4WD vehicles needed a higher flow for better cooling/shifting. The new filter is physically much larger than the old filter. At first glance you wouldn't think it would fit. There is even more filter area because the filter is folded over and welded inside to create twice the surface area. Flow restriction is no longer a problem with this filter. Be sure you order the correct long or short tube version depending on your pan design. This filter is only about $10 from www.bulkparts.com and comes with a new bolt and spacer. If the filter is ordered separately, it does not come with replacement O-rings or a pan gasket. The pan seal is $.70. SPX/FILTRAN.technical details can be viewed on www.bryco.com. SPX has the patent on this filter design #D422600 and many others. This is the same $35 filter you get from ford. They are the oem supplier.
