I have a 1996 Explorer XLT V8, AWD.

There was no stereo unit in the vehicle when I traded for it. How do I tell what type of system was in the vehicle from the factory? All of the factory plug-in connectors look to be present, and not cut. Do some systems have a sub, and others not? Location please if there is supposed to be a sub.

I installed a Chrysler unit (AM/FM/Cassette/CD) in my 1985 Quantum (no sub/4 speakers) with no problems, and want to install an identical unit into the Explorer. Thinking a sub might ruin the Chrysler unit. Thoughts?

Thanks,

David.

Yes, some have a sub, others don't. My 96 did not. OEM sub location is in the rear cargo area, passenger side. There will either be a speaker grill there, or a storage pocket.

toypaseo.... Thanks for your reply. Looks like I'll have to remove the inner qtr. trim to see if there is a sub. David.

@edselsouth1, you don't need to remove anything. It's visually obvious. It's either a storage pocket, or a flat trim piece with a metal grill insert...
