What was Ford thinking, I am in the process of replacing all the regular sensors on this 4.0. All I have left is the 02, and the air charge (IAC). Go to change the IAC and it is not in the airbox where it should be, and where it is on every fuel injected vehicle I have ever worked on. I look and look and cannot find it. So off to the FSM I go, and low and behold, Ford put it clear back in the upper intake manifold! What the hell were they thinking? That sensor measures the air temp. coming in, how can it do that correctly clear back there in the heat of the motor, and the crap that gets in there. I have not pulled the old one out, but I am sure it has a good coating of crap all over it!

Because that is the last available point before the air goes into the engine. Ideally they need to know what the air temperature is as it gets to the engine, not 3 feet away in the air-box. It does get hot there as you said, but the heat will affect the air going into the engine as well.

I don't no, on my 95 Grand Marquis it is in the airbox, before the filter even gets the outside air.

I need to change this post a little. I meant the IAT (Intake Air Temperture Sensor) I went back to the FSM, and it shows the IAT for the Explorer and Ranger in the plastic air intake tube, in front of the throttle body. If this is true that would be a fine place for it. I was referring to where they put it on my 4.0 E-4WD Aerostar. I assumed they put it in the same place for all three. They put it in the upper intake manifold back by the firewall. Why didn't they place it where they did for the Explorer and the Ranger? I am going to pull it tonight ,and see what it looks like. I went ahead and bought a new one for 13.00. My point is where they put it on the Aerostar, it is bound to pick up all kinds of crud, and not give accurate readings after a while.

Man, you had me going there, the IAC (Idle Air Control) is on the same place for all the ford engines. ..When you changed that, whew...but you are right, a 4.0 in an Explorer is not a 4.0 in an aerostar. The brain trust that designed these engines ought to have to 1) change the spark plugs 2) BUY an OBD2 Code reader 3)rebuild an A4LD every every year

BTW, I have had problems with the home PC, THANKS for the info you sent. that helps in building my file on part numbers. Also, how much did the FSM on disc cost, and where did you get it?
sounds like a handy item.

kps, I am glad the part #'s helped you out. If you need any more let me know. I got the FSM on CD from someone on Ebay. I won the auction for 19.00, can you believe that. I am in the process of lookinf for one for my 95 Grand Marquis. I have the FSM in book form for it, but the CD's are much quicker, and lighter! I have been busy doing mods on the Grand Marquis to have time to look. I have owned many cars, and the best motor out of all of them for power, fun, and sound (flowmasters) is the Ford 4.6, I just love that motor!
