Had the good old rattle start from the timing chains. New exactly what it was as my previous Explorer did the same thing. Before it got any worse i got in there and did the 00M12 kit replacement and replaced the rear tentioner as well. Rattle disappeared, GREAT! till about 2 weeks later it came back and now it rattles like a set of spanners in a metal toolbox being dragged down the road at 100 mph  HELP!!!!

FORD's better idea!!! Strikes again............the engineer should have been tied behind your vehicle and dragged.

Aloha, Mark

I second that Mark..........:D

Not only has it got the engine rattle, it has a groaning sound from the front end (possible wheel bearing), the ABS cuts in everytime its just about to come to a stop, a horrible metalic rattle coming from behind the dash and a wind noise coming from from somewhere behind the dash/lower windscreen. AAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Oh, and also the self levelling suspension warning light comes now and again.
Apart from that, its a great car........

I've been told is more the cassettes than anything else on the sohc

So basically i wasted my time replacing the tensioners? From doing a search on the forum, most people sorted there chain rattle just by changing the tensioners. Thing that gets me, is that the rattle disappeared for about 2 weeks. Am i just unlucky and something else has gone bad as well.

ABS failure is typical for sensor installed in the hub. Hub assembly is costly but due to some opinions it is possible to change only the sensor (my mechanic says it matches from FORD FIESTA).

Do you have any idea how to do this? Would be great if it can be done. I'll probably have to change the hub anyway cos i think the wheel bearing has gone, but who's to say its that sensor thats gone. Knowing my luck its another one. :(

Just looked at the ford worshop manual and it shows that the sensor is just bolted into the hub with one bolt and its only the sensor pickup that is built into the hub. Therefore, surely if you just renew the faulty sensor it should cure the problem. From what i've researched on exploration, I was under the impression that the sensor was built into the hub and you needed to replace the whole hub assembly.
 Confused now

The sensor is just bolted into the hub assembly and appears to be replaceable IF you can find an old unit where the bearing was gone. If only one of your bearings is gone, perhaps you can salvage the sensor from it and use it. I think they use some form of silicon to seal the sensor in and prevent water ingression.

Yes, you are CORRECT..........it is the cassettes more than anything for the FORD 4.0L sohc........though, the problem is characterized as a "timing chain problem."

The same can be said for the timing gear that breaks off a tooth or a rubber timing belt that shears a cog............it's all characterized as a "timing chain problem." Not to mention that a rubber timing belt is not a "chain."

I guess, in truely correct terms, a "timing chain problem" would be a streatched chain.

Aloha, Mark

PS......That still doesn't change my mind that the FORD engineer and FORD should be held accountable. The honorable thing to do vs. what the bean counters have decided to do (limited re-call).
