I've decided to do a filter and filter change on my 2007 Ford Explorer, 4.6L engine, 6R60 transmission.

I've seen two different filters listed for this transmission by major parts web sites:

1. Motorcraft FT160 (7L1Z7A098AA) with a smooth bottom surface.
2. Motorcraft FT171 (7L1Z7A098A) with an intake pipe on the bottom.

My transmission pan has a projection on the bottom (not a smooth bottom).

Which is the correct filter?

I had thought that all 6r60 trans had no sump and therefore used the FT160 filter. That's what mine uses.

If your pan has a "circular" sump that is about 1 1/2 to 2" deep, then you need the FT171 filter which has the pickup tube that extends into the sump.

I figured it out. The parts source I was using listed three filters which all said "from 12/04/06." All of these filters show the pickup tube. My car was manufactured in January 2007.

So the FT171 is the correct filter.
