211 (M) Ignition PIP signal was erratic or missing

That was a memory code, not a hard fault. I have no idea what a PIP signal is. Anyone??

Profile Ignition Pick-up circuit fault

Further info:
on your model the ignition is controlled by an Ignition Control Module (on later models the PCM controls ignition) on the ICM cable connector, terminal 1 is the PIP signal which appears to connect to the EECM. No idea what it does though - possibly controls the ignition settings (advance/retard) depending on readings from other engine sensors.

pmcmaster is correct. Basic spark function is controlled by the ICM. The EEC-IV computer controls timing advance. In order for the EEC-IV computer to control ignition advance, it needs to know, from the ICM, what the crankshaft and ICM are doing. From Mitchell for a '95 Explorer
The IDM is an input signal to the PCM that verifies spark
plug fire based on ignition coil primary discharge. IDM signal
consists of a single pulse for each engine RPM. No IDM pulse indicates
secondary ignition misfire.
Perform this test when directed by QUICK TEST. This test is
only intended to diagnose EEC-IV portion of ignition system. For
additional information on ignition system and component testing, see
I - SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS - EEC-IV (4.0L) article in the ENGINE
PERFORMANCE section. To prevent replacing good components, be aware
following non-EEC related areas may be at fault:
* Ignition Control Module (ICM).
* Ignition coil packs.
* Spark plugs and/or wires.
* Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor.
* Secondary ignition short to ground.
This test is intended to diagnose:
* IDM Wiring harness circuits.
* Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
1) Continuous Memory Code 211: Erratic Ignition
Code 211 indicates 2 successive erratic Profile Ignition
Pick-Up (PIP) pulses occurred. Possible causes for this fault are:* Loose wires or connectors.
* Secondary ignition short to ground.
* On-board transmitter equipment (2-way radio).
Repair any problems found, and repeat QUICK TEST. If problem
is not found, go to step 4). If vehicle does not start, go to
CIRCUIT TEST AC.
I would probably add the CKP as another possible cause as well, but the CKP is plugged into the ICM rather than the EEC-IV computer. Any good manual (see if you can get one at the library) should have the rest of the circuit test.
Good luck
