1996 Explorer XLT
Hey whats up,i just got a 1996 explorer xlt from my grandpa who recently passed away. Its a nice car with a little rust and 127,000 miles. Im 16 and im looking to fix some things. Im putting K@N filters on,magnaflow exhaust, pionere stero and thats it i think. But i have one problem. When i make a sharp right the left drivers side sounds like its rubbing or grinding something? Can anyone help? Im pretty good with cars but this has my mind boggled,im just hoping it has nothing to do with the transfer case.

hey welcome man. I have a 02 honda crv and i had the same problem. I kept traking it back to the place were we got the tires and they kept trying to fix it. I would check and see if the diffs and transfer case need cleaned cause my car stopped after that. Also my 01 sport is starting to do that to i just cleaned all my diffs and and doing my transfer tomorrow.

welcome

Holy hell did i forget about this site. Well i got my license october 10th and finally got to driving this beast! So far ive done a k and n filter for oil and air. Synthetic oil, pionere deck, new rear calipers, rear brake line and a new control arm.

Heres what i want to do,cold air intake, flowmaster, the throttle cable mod,33 inch tires, not sure on brand, black pro comp rims,2 12's and a amp.

Let me know of any cheap or free mods, and also can i make my own cold air intake? Im not sure about dishing out 300 that autozone wants.

Whats a good brand for a 2 inch lift? Will 33's work with stock suspension and ride height?

She sure can burn out,and handles good in the mud.

Do a 2" torsion twist up front (free) and add lift shackles (cheap) in the back for a cheap 2 inches. Add a body lift (cheap) and you should be able to fit 33"s (not cheap), maybe with a little cutting. Remove the trim below the bumper and any trim under the doors to gain some ground clearance.

As for the intake, you can buy a cone filter for relatively cheap and then grab a tb and MAF from a ford 5.0 in a junkyard. I think you'd be hard pressed to break $125-150 after all that.

I was thinking about doing 31's. Can you give me a link to the torsion twist and some nice shackles? Also a nice body lift.

Also what in the world is a tb and maf? Sorry but im more of a atv guy not cars, well love cars but dont understand all of the technicle parts.

You can fit 31"s stock with little to no rubbing. With 2" you would definitely have no rubbing.

Here's the Torsion Twist for the front http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=196965

And for the shackles in the rear, go for Warrior shackles for around $60 if you want beef and peace of mind, otherwise just drop 20 bucks on a set from autozone that are not as beefy.

Tb means throttle body, the thing between your intake manifold (on top of your engine) and intake tube. It's there to control how much air gets let into your engine based on how hard you press the pedal down. the tb from a 5.0 engine will be bigger and thus let more air into the engine for more power/torque.

Maf means Mass Air Flow, the thing on the other end of the intake tube that connects to your air filter. The principle is the same: bigger maf=more air into your engine. the maf from a ford 5.0 will bolt up.

Two things: The more you read, the more you know, so read up! there is so much information on this site it's ridiculous. Before long you will be schooling new members like I'm schooling you. And the other thing, use the search bar at the top of the screen. It's great for diggin up information. Good luck!

Alright so a stock throttle body and a maf from a 5.0 mustang will bolt right up and work? I was looking at the torsion bar and i may do that tonight! Same with the thorttle cable mod. And i planned on getting warrior shackels, since this will be riden on trails.

So i put a 70mm throttle body,5.0 maf,throttle cable mod and i should notice a decent diffrence?

I want to break at least 230 horsepower ahah, i think stock they are like 170?

Will get more engine mods as money comes, same with some headers.

:exporange:exp::yelexp::roll: hahaha,cool little symbols.

Well tonight i did the throttle cable mod,and holly crap!

Takes off quicker, and a lot more responsive.

Tomorrow im chaning the oil,and may do the bar,if not this weekend ill be doing some work to it.

I'm pretty sure I read if you flip the 5.0 tb upside down it will fit your 4.0. Look it up though just in case I'm wrong. I can't do that with my engine so I'm not 100% sure.

The 5.0 maf can come off any 5.0 vehicle. A mustang would work although (for me at least) I have seen maybe 1 or 2 5.0 mustangs in any junkyards around here. People just don't junk them. So look for 96-2001 v8 explorers or mountaineers. They have the same size maf I believe and are pretty plentiful since people cashed them in for Cash for Clunkers. I actually got a 5.0 maf today and put it on my 93 and there was definitely a noticeable improvement in throttle response. There was a little bit of muscle work involved and lots of swearing because my intake tube was a bit too small but I got it to fit in the end. :D

When you get the maf, leave the sensor (the black thing on top of it that has a wire sticking out the back) in the junk vehicle. Just use the sensor that is already in your explorer. Make sure you have a set of tamper-proof torx screwdrivers because the two screws in the sensor are tamper proof. I got a set for about 10 bucks at autozone.

If you're gonna upgrade your intake system you should also upgrade you exhaust and get some bigger piping and a freer-flowing muffler. Just don't go too big because our engines need some backpressure, which is decreased as you go up in pipe diameter. I got a Dynomax catback system pretty cheap and it gets the job done. I'm not sure what your options are for a 96 so just look around and ask some people what they bought and for how much.

Summit Racing is a good all-purpose car performance store. They usually have good prices and their shipping is cheap and quick. I've used them for plenty of stuff and they've never disappointed. Once you start getting into the tires and suspension though, you'll need to check out other places to buy it.

I plan on getting a full exhaust around christmas, summit racing is 30 minutes from me so thats a good plan too.

I want to find out about this throttle body mod,now what mm can it be? I seen some 70mm for 5.0 fords? Will a spacer help out,and am i able to make a cold air intake? I cant see spending 300 on a new one.

Dont bother with the spacer. Waste of money. Sure you can make a cold air intake. It wouldnt be to hard to do. Search and you will see others who have done it. If you are skillful enough you could even do like a ram air setup.

Heres a link how to mod your stock tb. I had a bbk tb on my old 93x and didnt notice anything so you are better off modding the one you got on there now.

Here's some info on the throttle body. It's actually from a 4.6L v8 http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=249607

I've heard spacers are useless. But again, do your own research just to make sure.

To be honest, I'm not sure if a cold air intake is any different from just adding a cone filter (which is able to take in more air than a stock airbox) and a larger maf/intake tube. Which is exactly what we have just talked about doing. Aftermarket companies like to throw jazzy words in front of their products to make them sound amazing and make you believe you'll get gains of 1000 hp and 1000 ft/lbs torque but in this case I think we are just doing the same thing that a cold air intake claims to do, for a fraction of the cost.

On the issus of the v8 tb. Please note that it hooks up fine to the SOHC which is what i got. You should be running the OHV since the sohc didnt come about till 97. I am not sure if the v8 tb will hook up direct to your engine. In the link provided above it looks like the guys mainly talking about are the v6 sohc guys.

Yeah, thanks for catching that. My b
