I've been delaying the upgrade of my stock system because I've been waiting for some decent mp3 HUs to become available. Finally, the JVC KD-SH99 is starting to have the features I like.

But - what's with the bright silver finish?? I kinda like the matte, muted finish of the Explorer dash. Adding this thing will scream, "Hey, look at me!! I'm aftermarket!". Maybe that's the idea. Other units (Explod, etc) have the same styling. I'm trying to figure out if I want such a "loud" addition to the dash.

I don't know - anyone have any opinions? It seems silly that the physical appearance should hold me back, but...

I'd tend to agree with you there. The more bright and snazy it looks the higher the chance it going to get stolen. "Hey look at me, I'm all green and silvery, steal me".

It does have a detachable face that turns the appearance black. But I just picture the sun always glinting off the silver finish into my eyes!

why not check out a kenwood excelon headunit. it's mostly black, nad the face flips around when the car is off (it is also detachable). eclipse has stayed with black for it's headunits, and they have every feature you will ever need.

I talked to a few reps about it bcause I think it looks ugly. All there replies were the same. Take a look at the home stereo stuff and you will see the same thing. It is the in thing, the Industrial Look as they call it.

I looked at a Kenwood 8017, but now I can't remember what feature the JVC had that made me choose it over the Kenwood. Back to the comparison shopping - I'll look at Eclipse, too.

Eclipse doesn't seem to make an MP3 unit. I looked on www.eclipse-web.com and couldn't find one. Back to looking at Kenwood!

pioneer

pioneer makes fantastic head units, and theyre not really that flashy at all. i recommend them.

I agree. i just put a pioneer in my X, and it looks real nice. Their new models have less buttons than before, and a nice, subtle style. Blends in nice with the existing dash, but it doesn't look stock. Then again.. I don't know many aftermarkets that do. The Pioneer's are probably some of the closest-to-blending-in headunits, along with a few others.

BTW, the pioneer's are black.

Some alpines fit in real well, with the green lighting to match the green dash...

Another good combo (if you want MP3s is the kenwood) I forogt which model it is, but its the only Kenwood MP3 player that isnt teh Z828 or Z919.

Looking for MP3!

I am looking for an MP3 player. Before I decided on MP3, I was looking at Pioneer units. The Kenwood that was referred to is the MP8017, which is getting good reviews. Anyway, not many MP3 choices that are a) quality brands, and b) look good in the X's dash.
