Which trans do I have???

Hello,

I just bought a 1998 Expolorer XL from a friend of mine. It is the 4.0L OHV with an auto trans. Where can I find out what trans it is? The gear indicator in the instrument cluster shows 1-2-d-od. But for some reason I didn't think the vg explorers came with 4sp autos...am I wrong?

Most likely a 5R55. It's a five speed auto

As I understand it, some of the 98's were made using what was left of the 4 speed shift displays from the previous model year, but with the 5r55e transmission, which IS a 5 speed.

My 00 has the same as all the other 2nd gens? I was under the understanding I too have the 5 spd?

YOU ALL HAVE 5R55E's. 5 speed automatics.
