I am in the process of maybe purchasing a 1354 transfercase from a fellow member on this bored. What i need to now is which transfercase (either the 1354 or 4405) will best mate up with my transmission. i have a 99 sport 2wd sohc v6 with a 5 speed automatic 5r55e transmission. Will any of these transfercases work or will i have to get a 4wd transmission for them to work? Also is there an option of maybe swapping in a manual transfercase instead of a automatic?
thanks for the help.

I would go with a manual TC, an Atlas II would be the best bet but they are some $$$. You dont have to change your tranny either

But does he have to change his whole tranny??

Yup, change the whole tranny.

Yikes, I thought it was just putting the adaptor on with the output shaft. This is why I stay away from tranny work.

Hmm.. I guess an adaptor would work. I have no clue LOL I just recall reading that the tranny would need to be replaced, because like you said the output shafts are different.

i thought that u could just swap out the 2wd output shaft with the 4wd output shaft. the only difference between the two is that one is longer than the other. right. how much different can the 2wd 5r55e transmission be from the 4wd 5r55e transmission. besides the obvious that one has a tcase and the other doesn't. their has to be a way to do this without swapping out the whole transmission.
at least i hope there is.
anymore ideas out their?

From what i understand you will need to swap out the output shaft with a 4WD one, you will need the 4WD tailshaft adaptor and then the t-case.

Do a search, someone has done this before, maybe Kris (1st gen Navajo)

Pretty much what Yomie said. you'll need the 4wd extension housing and a new output shaft. Not sure how it works in the automatics but in the manual transmissions the output shaft runs the entire length of the transmission is $$$ to replace.

thanks for the help. i got a few more questions. does anybody know were i could get a 4WD tailshaft adaptor and a output shaft other than a junkyard?

also how much do u think would be to much to pay for these parts?

is their anyway i could go with a manual t case instead of an automatic?

oh and doug how much would $$$ be? just wondering.

once again thanks for the help.

You'll have to take apart the entire transmission to put in a new output shaft . . mine as well get it checked/rebuilt or just find a 4x4 version. Once you've got your tranny set up for 4wd any of the t-cases mentioned (1354, 4405, Atlas) will work . I would suggest a manual t-case. Otherwise you will have to figure out wiring (adding t-case harnesses and relays, etc).

cool thanks for the help jefe. looks like i am going to go with a manual tcase. just have a couple of more questions.

which tcase is manual? 1354 or 4405
and from what year rangers and explorers can i find a manual tcase in?
thanks

1354 manual transfer cases can be found in 1st generation Explorers & early body style rangers.

A manual case, like a 1354m wouldn't involve any wiring - just getting the linkage right.

Wiring up an electric 4405 is not hard at all, its just swapping in parts, as the trucks are pre-wired. All you need can be found in a junkyard for under $75. There is a write up on here for installing it all, and I will be doing my own writeup soon after I complete my t-case swap. The advantage is electronic AWD for rain and light snow, and 2wd low for some serious grunt.

If you plan running large tires or a front locker with a 4405 forget about it they are not strong enough to to keep your tires turning. You'll be out on the trail trying to climb something and your front tires won't spin, the TOD clutch doesnt have enough holding power to turn large/locked tires. a 1354m is a much better option. Wiring up a 4405 will be a bit of a challenge as well. not only are you going to need the entire wiring harness for the t-case you're also going to need a new GEM.

ok looks like a manual t case for sure. just a little unclear about some stuff.
first is the manual t case called a 1354 or 1354m?
also would i need the exact same year and model output shaft and adaptor as the t case?
or will any 4wd output shaft and adaptor work with the manual t case?
also is there anyway to convert an electric shift t case to a manual or is just to much trouble?
thanks

The 1354 came in both electric and manual designs, both are called the 1354. The "m" at the end is just to know what one we're talking about.

The output shaft needs to be for your transmission, any year will work. The t-case end has been the same since the 80s.

No way to convert manual to electric, just go buy a manual :)

cool thanks alot. u guys have been a great and very helpful. now all thats left is to start hunting down all the parts.
thanks once again.

FYI: There is a junkyard near me, Roberstons Auto Salvage (1-800-551-7000) that had a few manual t-case shifters and linkages in 90s Rangers.
