This rather faint whine, barely audible above road noise at highway speeds got me concerned. It comes and goes, more-or-less randomly. Was almost sure it's the rear end, but the pitch appears the same regardless of speed. So perhaps it's the fuel pump? Haven't noticed any signs of insufficient fuel delivery, and no sound when idling, so I am baffled. I believe that my '98 has the older-style fixed output pump with a mechanical regulator, so the pump load does not depend on engine demand. Could this be pointing to an imminent pump failure nevertheless? Anything else that comes to mind?
