Wow, I didn't realize that is has been over a year since I posted here. Guess that means the truck has been good to me. :p:
Anyway... '98 Explorer, 240,000km on it. Everything origional or not repaired on it except the alternator which was changed last month, and the tires of course. Brakes have been done once since I have owned it, 29,000km ago. Engine was switched to Synthetic at 140,000km and I had the Diff, and the Tranny all changed over to Synthetic 30,000 km ago and have loved the differance in torque and pickup.
What is concerning me now is when I start from a complete stop, there is a whining sound comming from the rear of the car, like something is too tight. Sounds a bit like dragging a chair across the floor. Once I get going the sound dissapears, or I just can't hear it. Could it be a brake issue or a problem developing in the differential?
Any ideas are welcome.

Thanks

Paul

first, ***** does it concerns only forward or reverse as well. It looks like brake problems indeed (maybe pads). It is very easy to check. Take out wheel and the brake caliper, rotor and you have brakes clear. check pads for damage or friction against rotor, regulate (there is a special screw for it). then I would check leaf springs mounts and all that bushings from the rear suspension.

first thing I'd check is the parking brake shoes, if the hardware has coroded the side of the shoe can drag against the rotor and make noise, Also the disc backing plate may be touching the rotor. comon noise complaints
