2002 explorer
I recently purchased a 2002 Ford Explorer. When it was warm (above like 40 degrees) it was fine. Now at temps below that, especially really cold it has a whining sound coming from the transmission. It did this before and after a Ford dealer trans flush. I read somewhere that these transmissions possibly had a update or something as there was a filter issue from the factory. I would appreciate any help.

Hey bud.

I've got a whinney sort of noise aswell.
I've spoken to a few auto transmission places here in Australia and they reakon it most likely the internal pump
I haven't fixed mine yet I just turn the radio up a little bit

Older thread, but I hope this may help someone. Some 2002 (possibly 2003) models with transmissions built between certain dates had a tsb for this very problem. The fix was to drop the pan and replace the trans filter. Not sure why, but evidently, there were some problematic/defective filters during that time.

I know this post is 3 months old, just found it, but as "Mendy" said, the whining sound is most likely coming from low tranny "pump pressure". I bought my Ex in January 2011, very cold here in Buffalo at that time of year and the tranny would whine on cold start ups and quieted down after warmed up. The whine sounded similar to a bad power steering pump but with the whiney noise coming through the floor boards by the transmission hump. I notified the dealership about the issue, they had a transmission shop do a tranny pump replacement and a pan fluid and filter change and the whine was gone after that. Only problem for me was, the tranny had other issues and needed a rebuild shortly thereafter.
