OK guys I did a search and couldnt find anything with my symptoms.

I recently discovered a whining noise while accelerating. While on the freeway the noise is very high pitched like a turbo spooling up but if I let of the gas or punch it to pass someone the noise stops momentarily.

My first though was the IAC but I havent checked it yet. BTW its a 2001 XLS 4x4 w/ 86k+

Anyone have, had, this problem or know whats going on???

Check for any Vaccum leaks.

yea it really sounds like a vac leak, have you replaced anything or tinkered under the hood before this sound came up? You could have accidently bumped a hose somewhere, i've done that a few times replacing the air filter

Sometimes too the rubber caps that close off the extra vac lines on the vaccum tree come off and you will here a hiss/whine noise.

Worse vac leak senario would be the plenum gasket is leaking.

Ah that makes sense, I did however forget to mention i put in a new modular intake. Awesome i'll got check that out and get some hose clamps so I dont bump anything loose again.

Could this vac leak harm the engine??

Thanks guys!

Does it make this whine while idling or is it only while accelerating? The good thing about this is it can't be a major leak, atleast into the motor itself, your computer would be tossing lean codes.

It only whines while accelerating past 15mph. I put a hose clamp on the vac tube from the intake and it still makes the noise but that may be because the hose is plastic and the grommet from the intake is rubber, intern not sealing well.

Do you know if I can get a rubber vac hose??

Update

So I put a hose clamp on the vacuum line that connects to the intake, checked and made sure all other fittings are tight. The whining noise is still there but the check engine light has lit up yet.

Should I try another solution and find the leak or should I leave it and not worry about it? OR could this noise just be from the high flow filter??

In addition, should I clean the TB??

Thanks for the help guys!!!

I need to ask this cause i am just wondering is this an Alternator Whine Squeal noise?

I know i stated before it sounds like a Vaccum Leak which it sill can be one, but where is the issue if it is one. This can alos be the IAC whine many have stated having an issue with on their units.

I'm not too sure if it's the IAC or alternator. I'll check for the noise tomorrow after work, i'll be able to pop the hood and rev the engine to pin point the whine location. I don't remember having this problem before I put the intake kit in. I did check all the connections of the intake and they are all tight and sealed but the vacuum line is questionable. This is because the vac line is plastic and the grommet off the intake is rubber. Even with a hose clamp I dont feel it is sealed enough. I don't mind the whine cuz all I need to do is turn up the stereo.

My coworked said I should try to find the leak by spraying ether on the vac line connections so if all else fails thats what i'll end up doing.
