I'm getting a whirring, grrring, not quite grinding sound coming from the right front of my 98 Mountaineer AWD (50,000 miles on vehicle) especially when decelerating. First noticed the noise as I was exiting the highway and slowing down, the noise is more prominent under this type of condition. First thoughts are cv joints or wheel bearing/hub assembly. I've searched through the posts and it seems others have had similar problems but no resolutions. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like a wheel bearing.

Let me guess... Only hear it a low speeds, sounds almost like a grinding noise?

Jack the vehicle up, take off the tire, and spin the wheel. Do you hear the noise? Can you feel it as you turn it? If so, it's a good chance it's the bearing.

Replacing the bearing requires replacing the entire hub, they're all in one piece. Not a hard task at all, just an expensive part to replace.

That's about right yob_yeknom. I'll have to take it out for a test ride tonite (it's the wife's car) and then pull the tire and see what I can find. I'll check the front half-shafts while I'm at it and see if I've got a CV going south. Bearing/hub assembly is about $175 from what I gather. Thanks.
