Whirring noise when gas is let up

I originally read about the whirring noise on here which seemed to point to the transfer case on my '97 Exp. I had the chain, electric motor, gear and rebuild done to it and picked it up yesterday morning. Drove it to work (150 miles per day round) with no troubles. Then tonight when I was slowing up to exit the freeway it did it again. Any idea's as to what is going on? Any help to save on what I've spent already would be greatly appreciated.

Is there any way to eliminate the need for the transfer case if you have no plans to use 4WD?
And would this possibly solve the problem without further need for more spending?

I have the same problem and I am in the middle of swapping my transfer case for one I got at a salvage yard. From what of picked up here, there is a TSB out on the helical gears in our specific transfer case. Mine was making that noise on and off for a couple days, then it was doing it all the time until it wouldn't go in to reverse any more. Seems like if you just had yours rebuilt it would be under warranty. ..

Also, I bought a Borg Warner 1354 electric shift transfer case from a guy on this board, which didn't end up being the right one. If this happens to be what you have, I'll make you a good deal on it, just PM me.

Also, there is no way to by pass the transfer case even if you don't plan on using 4x4.

Redrider - read the thread "'97 transfer case broke again". It sounds like you needed a new rear case because the bering is worn. Is there up and down play in the rear shaft??

Update

I've had mine back almost 2 weeks now after replacing the front and rear transfer cases with rebored ones from www.omegamachines.com (which I had read about on here). They were very knowledgeable, moreso than the manufacturer which my mechanic had called about the problem. So far I've had no issues and I'm hopeful that it's been resolved.
I really wish I had replaced the case halves instead of the other stuff first as it would have saved me a ton of money.

Ditto the above. The shop I used had mine apart 3 times.. New motor, speed sensors the whole shot.. Still had the same problem. Wasn't till I replaced the case with a reman one that did bushings on tyhe case and a redesinged shift came that all is well. The shop was redy to put in a GEM and relays.. That would not have fixed it either..
The guy's really tried and didn't charge me but once for labor but they just couldn't find it.. The problem seems to be indemic to the 4404 case..

The 4404 is the t case on the AWD V8's. The V6 transfer case is the BW4405. Also the truck can be turned into a 2wd, it's just not as easy as pulling off the t case.

i believe i read a post on here that someone figured out a way to bypass the t-case when they didnt need it by running a switch into the wiring to interupt the circut do a search see what u can come up with im almost posotive its around here somewhere

I don't think it wouldn't work. You are talking about the brown wire mod, that cuts the power to the electromagnetic clutch in the t-case.

Your not being an ass, and i'm not sure if it would work or not. I think the rear of the t case would still be turning, and from the clutch forward wouldn't be. I may very well be incorrect.

Yeah, they didn't charge me but once for labor, were willing to do whatever it took. But they weren't too happy with BW since it was their equipment but didn't know how to fix it, gave like 7 things to check whereas the company in CA that did the rebore knew exactly what was going on. And they were very inexpensive, even with two day rush, wish I had gone with the case halves from the start, regret that immensely.
