If they removed the exterior body panels from a 1st or 2nd gen, doors, and the front stuff (grille, headlights, bumpers) - how many of us would actually recognize its an Explorer from 50 for so feet away

Nope they did a test on if you get better gas mileage with the air on windows up or with the air off windows down.

If there is any vehicle to use as a test these are good ones. I think they had a barn side in mind when designing the aerodynamics of 1 gen explorers!
