It's really weird. I have a stock muffler that's a year old and all of a sudden it would do it for a second going up hills, but now it does it all the time between 2100-2900 RPM. The tone becomes kind of cool, but to me it sounds kind of like the Dodge Caravan minivans. Anyway, I got under the car to look for pinched off pipe or holes in the muffler and couldn't find any. I don't think it has anything to do with the exhaust. When I started it a few minutes ago, the engine almost died and it shook the whole car, but then it started and ran fine. I hope someone has an answer. Thanks

Is the check engine light on? It may be running bad caused by weak spark plugs, weak plug wires, or clogged injectors or O2 seosors?

no the check engine light isn't on.

Possibly one of the cats are becoming clogged or are starting to crap out on you.

beavis,
do you have O2 sensors behind the cats? If you don't then I agree it might be the cats. i didn't really think about that before. i know on the newer ones it has O2 sensors behind the cats so the check engine light would come on if the cats were bad, but I an not sure about you 94

What's a new cat going to cost me? Someone told me it be like $600. That sucks.

clean the heck out of your maf, throttle body and IACt the computer and run the codes. also the air/fuel ratio could be off and causing something screwy.

my fake dad says when it does that get onthe highway and run it wide open for a minture to "blow it out" of course if its sick it might blow it up.

Clean everything

Just clean everything like MAF and throttle body, and then disconnect negtive, see if she runz betta then.

If you buy new aftermarket hig flow cats I have seen them for like $200. after installation it may be more (unless you do it) and you get better exhaust flow and more power from that :-). Good luck!

There are no O2 sensors after the cats. That didn't start until '96.

A new cat, like Travis said, should be around $200. Expect at least $150 to have one installed. Question is, do you have one cat or two?

yob_yeknom,
do you have high flow cats? if so what brand and how you like them?

Travis, unfortunately I do not have aftermarket cats. I wish I did though, but have had no luck in finding any high flow models for Explorers.

Weren't you trying to find out if ones for a Ranger would work? How'd that turn out?

The ones for the ranger will not work. they are different i was told. i know someone who is having high flow cats installed at an exhaust shop. I will find out what brand. he has a 96
