I have a 91 and I have been noticing this strange sound, it only makes this sound when I step on the accelerator pedal to pass someone or something of that sort. Does any one know what this sound is? It doesn't seem to serious, just kinda seems like its struggling or somethin? Thanks

I'm not clear on what your noise is from the message? Dead Link Removed Is the pedal itself making a noise as you are pressing it, or is it the engine making the noise when you are stomping on the gas? What does the noise sound like?

Sorry I didn't tell you what it sounds like, its kinda hard to explain it though, it seems like its coming from the firewall, and I don't think its the pedal, its just kinda weird, I can't really tell where its coming from because it only happens when the pedal is all the way down and that mainly only when I want to pass someone which is when I can't really be searching around \everywhere for the sound. But to describe the sound its like a fast clunking sound?? Sorry I can't really describe it that well, but thats as good as I could do. Thanks for any help anyone has for me.

Sorry, more questions to you question... Is it a one time only when you press the pedal, or does is continue making the sound while the pedal is depressed? My first guess would be the linkage for a one timer, but if it's a continuous clunking, I'd guess an engine related problem. Does it change at all as the engine revs higher and accelerates? Anything to try and narrow it down a bit would help.

Well, let's see what happening with your truck when this is happening.
1. pushing down on the excellerator WOT will cause the transmission to down shift.
2. More force is being applied to drivetrain
My questions to you.
Does this "noise" happen when the transmission is shifting?
Is it a constant noisy or just happen once or twice,
Did you check to see if anything in the engine compartment was loose?
Did you check to see if anything around the front suspension was loose?

I have been paying close attention to this thread. Last weekend I got in my truck to take a 220 mile trip to Virginia. As I was driving, I pressed the accelerator and I got a real low tone from the engine/tranny. It was strange and something I hadn't heard before and it was enough to make me turn the radio down and listen to it.I was going about 45 mph at the time and I was around 2000 rpm. I can't remember what gear I was in, I have an auto, but I didn't hear it the rest of my trip until I stopped off halfway, then I had the experience again. I don't think it was anything with the pedal, but this post caught my attention. Is this like what you experienced rock883?

Man, I just keep on leaving stuff out, sorry...anyways, my 91 is a 5 spd. and while driving today I tried to find out what it was. Here's how the sound comes along, when I am in like 3rd gear and the RPM's are at about 1500 or something low like that, and I press down the pedal it makes the sound and it sounds like its coming from the pedal, although, now that I concentrated on the sound it seemed to be coming from the floorboard just below the pedal. Now it doesn't really matter what gear just as long as the rpm's are low and I step on the pedal and try to get some speed. I haven't really tried it on higher rpms, cause I think the engine will just go faster then, but when its at low rpm's then it seems like somethings struggling to get going when its low.

To answer TPLYNCH's question, its only when I press the pedal, and only when its ALL the way down, but as soon as I take my foot off a little it stops. Thanks again for the help. Hopefully that helps you guys, but if you have any more questions about it, feel free to ask.

Ok, I have been paying more attention to the noise and to make the sound a little clearer, it is like a rattling, seems to be coming from the transmission maybe. You know when you are in too high a gear for your speed and the transmission makes your car sound like a diesel almost, well, its kinda like that, but in a rattling noise. I probably confused you guys too much by telling you a million different things, but thanks for any help.

Although you are on the wrong side of the car, if I were to play the odds, I would say to check the shield over you catalytic converter. They are always coming loose. It would certainly explain the rattling sound. Hope this is the case. BTW - have you tried just looking under the truck for a loose piece of metal somewhere? It's a place to start.

Hey NoBoundries, that is something like the noise I have and I did the same thing, right when it happened, I turned down the radio and stepped on the pedal too look for the sound.

D F Willy, no the explorer doesn't shake at all its just a strange noise, I could probably check for some metal. Thanks again

Along with this noise when you accelerate, does the Explorer anywhat vibrate? If so there could be a possibility that you need your u-joints replaced. I had that happen, it's kinda like a loud thump while you accelerate faster than about 35-40mph and the car will vibrate and thump more when you accelerate. Just another idea to check into.

same sound, same story with my 99xls automatic. ticking (like coat hanger tapping against metal) ONLY when accelerating to pass on interstate. had air induction service recently. helped engine, but not sound. had suggestion of using plus gasoline, but didn't change ticking. have you figured it out?

Well, I haven't had any luck finding it out yet. So yours only does it on the highway?? Have you tried stepping on it going at slower speeds to see if the sound comes, cause mines does it whenever I slam on the gas.

Are you sure this isn't your problem? Maybe you just need to downshift when you pass.

I too have noticed this same similar sound, mine seems to be a metalic diesel sound, that happens occasionally when I accelerate, with low rpms. At highway sppeds I have not heard it at all. I've looked but could not find anything. Very strange. Has anyone else had luck in solving this problem? By the way, mine seems to be coming from the firewall/engine compartment, and it really does soundlike something loose.....

Rock883 - I just noticed my 91 XLT making sound when I press firmly and/or punch the accellerator. At first I thought it was because I was running the A/C, so I shut it off, left the windows up, and punched it. Same noise. Sounds to me like gurgling. I have no idea what it is, but it doesn't seem to be a problem. Could it be fuel line(s) or something. I'm not a mechanic, so anyone who replies please do so in English.

I have yet to find where the sound is coming from. Oh well, I will just let it go and hope its nothing serious.

rock 833.... i have a few suggestions. You were kinda vague, but i know that feeling all too good. First of all, have you thought about a rocker arm? When you punch the gas it makes a diesel sound. My blazer did the same thing, and it had a loose rocker arm. But i didn't fix it and later i blew the engine so now i'm fixin that. Another thing that could be a problem is the Ford Explorer 4x4's have a crappy tranmission. Could that be the problem? I don't know if i helped, but that old balzer of mine did the same thing and i think that it might be it. check to see if it gets worse and you can hear it at a idle, it'll be faint but you can hear it. If you can that's a good chance that's your problem. hope i helped a little
